Judicial Service Association (JSA)

Dr Charika Marasinghe received the honour of being invited as a guest speaker at the annual conference of Judicial Service Association held on the 15th of December 2007 based on the theme “Violence Against Children”. Dr Marasinghe spoke on “Sexual abuse: restoring shattered childhood and ensuring responsible adulthood.”

Incidentally, Dr Marasinghe was the only non-judicial guest speaker at this event, the audience comprising all magistrates and district judges serving island-wide.

Transforming political leadership

At the invitation of the Young Professionals Association of the United National Party (the main opposition political party of Sri Lanka) Dr Charika Marasinghe made a presentation on “Rights of the Child”. She elaborated on the child’s personality, the hopes and aspirations of children, child behaviour, the feeling of protection they establish through love, care and situation of child rights in Sri Lanka. The event was organized as part of the drafting process of UNP’s National Policy on Protection of Children and Women. The speech was educative and informative to all those working for and with children. Women in Need (WIN), a non-governmental organization of Sri Lanka geared towards the welfare and protection of women, especially, advocating women’s rights too were among the resource panel.

With this in view, C R L has designed an innovative programme to reach out to the inner self within a child and attempt to transform their lives in a way which will help them transcend both pleasant and bitter childhood experiences and move into a balanced adulthood.
